We heat our home with wood in the winter and years ago I splurged on a camp axe from Brant and Cochran for splitting kindling and breaking up bigger logs. I could have bought any old hardware store axe but having a heirloom quality tool to work with on a daily basis really makes the job so much more rewarding and enjoyable. It’s also been sharpened twice in 4 years of regular use and still cuts like a knife.

The poster of this vintage Down East cover hangs above my desk at the Down East office. I just love it so much.  Last year I bought my first sailboat, one that is not wood like the boat in the illustration but still one with plenty of work to be done and so now when I am editing photos and sending emails I can look up and be reminded of all the other work I have to do when I get home.

A while back we did a bitters roundup in Down East and I was mailed a bunch of different bitters from companies around Maine so that they could be photographed for the story. I kept a handful after the shoot was over and we still have a number of them in rotation on our bar cart. Vena’s are some of our favorites, they are perfect for adding a unique and subtle twist to a classic drink like a gin and tonic.
