Sail with the Schooner Grace Bailey on this unforgettable four-night adventure along the coast of Maine with Down East Staff Photographer, Dave Waddell.
Workshop Description
We’ve partnered with Schooner Grace Bailey, on this unforgettable four-night adventure along the coast of Maine with Down East Staff Photographer, Dave Waddell. As an authentic coasting schooner originally built in 1882 and now set up for passenger comfort with newly refreshed cabins, enjoy the living history of coastal Maine in action as we sail around the islands of the Penobscot Bay. Slow down your pace of life and experience the majestic coastline from the perspective of the sea. Anchor every evening in a quiet cozy cove, explore shoreside walks on the hard-to-reach islands and treat yourself to fresh seafood and local hearty fare from our onboard chef.
This is a photo retreat, not a workshop. The aim is to create a unique, inspiring space for creative and visual arts professionals to connect, share ideas, and talk openly about what is or isn’t working in their practice. Conversations will unfold naturally, but we’ll begin with themes like sustaining creativity, staying inspired, and avoiding burnout. Each morning after breakfast, we’ll gather for a brief group discussion, then break for a full day of sailing and free time. Participants are encouraged to keep conversations flowing informally throughout the day. In the evening after dinner, we’ll reconvene for another short discussion to wrap up the day’s topic—before doing it all again the next day.
All photos (except where noted) were taken by Dave during a multi-night trip on Grace Bailey in 2025. Here's some words from Dave about his experience last summer.
"The slower sailing pace of a few days off-grid with destinations only dictated by the wind and tide is, in my opinion, a welcome and refreshing pause from the technological blur of the modern world and for visual artists and photographers, can be an incredible way to hit the creative reset button. Being fully immersed in a remote, raw and beautiful environment in a way that also so authentically connects you to the history, culture and traditions of that place is a truly valuable experience that is becoming increasingly difficult to find. As a photographer (who was “working”) I’m pretty sure I never put my camera down. There was always something to photograph, between the fascinating and constant activity on deck, to the goings-on in the galley, to the ever-changing slideshow of islands, lighthouses and lobster boats sliding by on the other side of the rail, the options for image-making were quite literally endless, every corner of the boat is photogenic. We also made numerous stops along the way where guests could go ashore, sometimes in small towns or fishing villages and other times to uninhabited islands for lobster bakes and exploratory hikes...all not to be experienced without a camera in hand."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in this trip?
Accommodations for four nights and all meals.
What is not included in this trip?
$25 for parking. Travel to and from the dock in Rockland. Travel insurance (highly recommended.)10% (of your trip cost) cash gratuity is customary for our devoted crew.
Is it a problem that I have dietary restrictions or allergies?
It is not a problem at all. Our chef is happy to accommodate any food allergies or dietary restrictions. Just make sure to let us know when you're booking.
Do we know where we are going ahead of time?
No. One of the most unique parts of our trips is that we do not know where we are going before we depart Rockland, or from day to day! The coastal winds of Maine can change every day. The tides are different for each departure. We play the hand we're dealt to best win the day. Some trips have set stops included but, even then, we strive for variety to and from those places. Every trip is different, even if we've done it before.
Can I charge my phone on the boat?
Yes! Each cabin will have USB-A ports to charge your devices. USB-A are the ones with the rectangular plug, not the smaller USB-C plugs that most European phones and newer iPhones have. Note that the cabins DO NOT have AC plugs.
What about charging camera gear?
The Grace Bailey is 143 years old and while she has been updated with a handful of modern conveniences like usb charging ports for phones and small devices in the cabins, keeping larger camera equipment charged that requires an AC outlet can be a bit tricky. Usually once or twice a day the crew will run a generator for a short period of time to charge batteries on the boat and during that time we will have the chance to plug chargers into a limited number AC outlets. However these windows of time are short and we will be sharing with other photographers so my recommendation would be to come with extra batteries pre-charged and ready to go. This will vary slightly from person to person based on your camera and how many images you tend to shoot but a good rule of thumb would be to come with a fully charged battery for each day, so 4-5 batteries and then you can top them off as needed along the way.
What do I pack?
It's always cooler on the water, and we're powered by the wind - so make sure to have some sweaters and layers. Sneakers and soft-soled shoes are best on deck and for walkabouts on shore.Sun stuff: sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen. Rain jacket and rain pants if you're the type to want to watch a steely sea in the rain. Swimsuit: summer splashdowns can be great fun!BYOB: We've got a big cooler on deck. You're welcome to bring all your favorite beers, wines or spirits to punctuate your trip and celebrate your vacation choice.
Will I get seasick?
It is doubtful, but everyone has different levels of sensitivity. The sheltered coastal waters we sail are much shallower than the open ocean. They are much calmer. These waters are world-renowned as one of the best and most beautiful places to sail. If you are very sensitive, then Dramamine or the like will put you at ease.
Will we be going ashore?
Yes, that's another fun part of our adventures! We visit island nature preserves, deserted islands, quaint Maine coastal villages, rustic harbors, bustling island towns.
