Workshop Description

Katahdin is the iconic hike in Maine and the famous location of the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The prominence of this mountain is stunning, the views are spectacular, but the real beauty of this hike is its relentless physicality: it's a true hiker’s hike.

Join Maine Sport as we aim to summit Katahdin, in the very best fashion . . . with two spectacular overnights in one of New England's best and most-coveted campsites, the epic campground at Chimney Pond. We’ll overnight in the Chimney Pond bunkhouse before and AFTER making the ascent of Baxter Peak. Depending upon the capability of the group, we’ll either loop across Pamola Peak and tackle the famed Knife’s Edge or ascend the Saddle or Cathedral trails and retrace our path back down to Chimney Pond.

Maine Sport will provide round trip transportation, a registered Maine Guide, two nights lodging at the Chimney Pond Bunkhouse, and two backpackers’ dinners and breakfasts at Chimney Pond.

  • Day One: Meet at Maine Sport in Rockport, drive to Baxter State Park and hike up to Chimney Pond where we'll make camp and prepare dinner.
  • Day Two: Ascend Baxter Peak,  top out on Katahdin, and descend back down to Chimney pond for a well earned celebratory meal.
  • Day Three: Hike out from Chimney Pond  to Roaring Brook and drive back to Rockport.

Please note that the minimum age to participate is 16.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about transportation?

We’ll meet at Maine Sport Outfitters in Rockport and transit to Baxter State Park together.

What should I pack?

Katahdin can be all four seasons any time of the year so pack appropriately.  Sturdy hiking boots are a must as the trail is exceedingly rocky.  A synthetic base layer, synthetic insulating layer and rain gear are a requirement. Maine Sport will provide an equipment list.

What happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

Maine Sport does not usually cancel trips due to inclement weather.  Forecasts of lightening or severe weather, will result in a cancellation.  All refunds will be in the form of the original transaction. Maine Sport is not be responsible or liable for other expenses incurred by the participant as a result of such a cancellation.

Do I need a lot of hiking experience?

Experience level is modest. The days are relatively short— only four plus miles a day — but the hiking/climbing is strenuous, so participant should be in good shape. Slow and steady will be the way to go.
