Workshop Description

Join Maine Sport Outfitters as we paddle “downeast” from the maritime hub of Port Clyde navigating past Marshall Point light and Mosquito Head, exploring granite islands, bold headlands and protected coves. We’ll enjoy a catered lunch and a leisurely rest on a remote bluff overlooking Penobscot Bay before paddling past innumerable seals and seabirds watching us from nearby ledges. We’ll land steps from our seaside bed and breakfast to enjoy an end of the day refreshment and dinner (on your own). For those who want a little more adventure, there is a nature preserve next door with hiking trails and an abandoned granite quarry for a quick dip before dinner. Day Two begins with a hearty breakfast at the inn, exploring inlets, estuaries and fishing harbors and landing at one of Mid-coast Maine’s most notable lobster shacks for lunch. After a negotiating a few more cuts and inlets our trip ends at a local seaside brewery for a very well deserved beer and food truck pizza. This is a two day paddle (5-6+ hrs on water each day.)

Please note that the minimum age to participate is 16.

More about Craignair Inn

The Craignair Inn is a warm and welcoming bed and breakfast situated on a breathtaking section of coastline just south of Rockland. The inn was originally built to house granite quarry workers and evidence of the quarry workers’ time is portrayed in the beautiful granite causeway that stretches across the water to Clark Island, where a great quarry was once the center of this picturesque village. Clark Island is a magical place located just across the causeway from The Craignair Inn. They welcome guests looking for a peaceful retreat on the coastal edge of MidCoast Maine.

  • Equipment: Kayak, life vests, paddles, dry bags

Frequently Asked Questions

What about transportation?

We’ll meet at Maine Sport Outfitters in Rockport and transit to Port Clyde together.

What should I pack?

Generally, you’ll want to pack paddling clothes for time on the water and then cozy “apres paddle” clothes for dinner and the overnight at the inn. Paddling clothes should include synthetic (no cotton please) shorts, water shoes and a long sleeve top. We encourage paddlers to bring a rain jacket and an insulating layer to be stored in your boat’s hatches if the weather turns rainy. Be sure to include swimwear for a dip in the quarry. Suitcases or duffels with “regular” clothing will be transported to the inn (day one) and the finish (day two.) Maine Sport will provide kayak, life vests, paddles, dry bags.

What happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

Maine Sport does not usually cancel trips due to inclement weather. However, small craft advisories or forecasts of lightening or severe weather, will result in a cancellation. If Maine Sport cancels your trip, you will receive a full refund for all costs except the reservation at the Craignair Inn. We will maintain your reservation at the Craignair to ensure all of our guests have a place to stay during the busy summer season. All refunds will be in the form of the original transaction. Maine Sport is not be responsible or liable for other expenses incurred by the participant as a result of such a cancellation.

Do I need a lot of paddling experience?

Some paddling experience is recommended.

Cancellations

The payment is 50% refundable in the event you have to cancel, as long as the cancellation is made 21 days before the trip. After that time, your payment is non-refundable. Alternately, 100% of your payment will be refunded if a replacement can be found prior to the trip.
