It is inspired by the great fire of Portland, sometimes known as the 1866 great fire of Portland. The fire occurred on July 4, 1866—the first Independence Day after the end of the American Civil War. It was the greatest fire yet seen in an American city. The city seal depicts a phoenix rising from ashes, a reference to recovery from four devastating fires.
“Resurgam” is the motto of the city of Portland which is Latin for “I shall rise again.”
